Health Benefits of Volunteering

Researchers who have studied volunteering have discovered that volunteerism is a "secret ingredient" to helping people stay healthy and feel fulfilled. The social support that volunteers receive when they engage in volunteer activity is directly related to their health and sense of well being. Conversely, individuals who remain isolated and reject opportunities to interact with others tend to have poorer health and feel less fulfilled.

10 Ten Reasons for Volunteering

  1. You're urgently needed
  2. Experience not required
  3. You choose your own schedule
  4. You learn and do something new everyday
  5. You'll never get a pay cut
  6. You're never a victim of downsizing
  7. You're guaranteed as much overtime as you want
  8. You get paid the same, even on your day off
  9. You feel the joy of giving from the heart
  10. You get a free meal

WHY I VOLUNTEER...

"When I retired I felt the need for something to do. I like having something, away from home, to get up in the morning to do.  I also like to work with people. We at MVRMC have an excellent group with whom to work."

Beulah Archer, 21 Years Service

"I like being busy and I feel it is a privilege to do volunteer work. I enjoy working with others that also like what we are doing. I am so grateful to be able to do service in this way."

Elaine Mason, 10 Years Service

"The reason I joined the MVRMC auxiliary was mainly for personal reasons. My husband passed away and I was getting very bored and with boredom comes depression, so I thought staying busy and trying to help others would help me, which it did. By helping patients, family, and visitors find their destination and seeing they are taken care of is part of our main purpose. They all appreciate the help and concern we show them."

Rosie Stover, 2 Years Service

"To be a support for those that are going through any kind of medical procedure. I know how scared I am when I have to have tests or go into the hospital. When someone takes the time to make me feel comfortable things go much better. Also, being new to the area, volunteering lets me meet new people and make new friends."

Joan Tanner, 1 Year Service

WHY I VOLUNTEER...

"I like being around people and the ones at MVRMC are wonderful, kind and God fearing. I love every minute of the time I spend at MVRMC."

Imogene Heath, 5 Years Service

"Volunteering makes me feel useful and I love others. I benefit far more than I can ever give to others in return. Volunteering is very rewarding and therapeutic for me."

Barbara Reichert, 10 Years Service

"As I gave careful consideration as to where I would live to give of my free time, it did not take long to contact MVRMC. Working with babies, holding, cuddling and caring for them is a dream come true."

Robbie Andreas, New Volunteer
