Cardiopulmonary
Diagnostics
The following are the various
procedures performed in our lab:
EKG and electrocardiogram
is a test that is done to obtain an electrical reading of the heart.
The information obtained allows the physician to determine if further
testing is needed.
Holter monitor:
Because the EKG gives only a brief reading of the electrical activity
of the heart, the Dr may order a study that will supply him/her with
more information. One the the tests the doctor may order is a holter
monitor. A patient comes to the lab and has a small monitor attached
that will record every heartbeat they have for the next twenty-four
hours. These are usually put on patients with symptoms of dizzy,
fainting, rapid heart rate of palpitations.
Stress Testing:
Follow up testing for chest pain that may or may not be caused by the
heart. Various forms of stress testing are available to your
physician, from basic walking stress test to stress test that utilize
pharmaceutical and radio nuclide agents to stress echocardiogram. Your
physician will decide which modality is right for you,
Echocardiogram:
This is a procedure done to assess the mechanical function of the
heart. This is done by taking ultrasound images of the heart. The
pictures obtained will show the doctors the size of the heart, if a
person has any murmurs and what might be causing them, and also how
well the heart is functioning.
Tran Esophageal
Echocardiogram: If the doctor is not able to get adequate
images with an echocardiogram, he/she may schedule a patient for a
trans esophageal echocardiogram. This test is done as a same day
procedure. The patient is given sedation via IV to relax them during
the procedure. One the patient is relaxed and ready, the physician
inserts a small scope down the esophagus until it is directly behind
the heart. This allows for a clearer picture of the valves and smaller
structures in the heart that may be difficult to see with a regular
echocardiogram. Following the procedure, the patient is recovered and
watched until the sedation has worn off, then they are free to go
home.
